In 2000, the introduction of mobile doors marked a turning point for China's furniture industry, opening up new possibilities in the customized market. Over the past decade, the custom furniture sector has gradually matured, with major brands shifting their focus from mass production to market segmentation. From mobile doors to full wardrobe systems, and eventually to whole-house furniture, it's clear that standard finished products can no longer meet the diverse needs of consumers. Customization has now become a popular trend, driven by the desire for personalization.
Personalized demand has pushed the market to adopt advanced technologies that streamline the customization process. As consumer awareness of individuality and innovation grows, mass-produced furniture is no longer sufficient for many buyers. According to Chen Xiaotai, chairman of Top 100, "In recent years, custom furniture has gained popularity because more people are seeking personalized solutions. Custom-made options allow for tailored experiences that match specific living spaces and preferences."
Unlike traditional finished furniture, custom pieces require precise measurements and tailored designs. For large manufacturers, the difference between customized and non-customized production is minimal. Advanced technology plays a key role in simplifying this process. As Chen explains, "From a manufacturing perspective, we use a scientific and standardized system to create personalized combinations. For example, our custom wardrobes can be adjusted based on the actual dimensions of a room, and internal storage partitions can be freely configured. These partitions follow international standard sizes for easy adjustments, and we also add additional drawers for better organization."
Despite its growth, the customized furniture market still lacks standardization. There are tens of thousands of furniture manufacturers in China, but only a few specialize in custom production. Most are small workshops, leading to inconsistencies in quality and design. "Many manufacturers lack the expertise to deliver high-quality custom solutions," says Chen. "Issues like poor material selection or flawed structural design are common, which can affect both the durability and functionality of the furniture."
Rough manufacturing and deceptive practices remain significant problems. Some small businesses take advantage of the growing demand by using professional designers and complex customization procedures to inflate prices, while others may alter specifications or use substandard materials to deceive customers. Worse yet, some sell furniture with excessive formaldehyde at low prices, posing serious health risks. Consumers are advised to choose well-established brands when purchasing custom furniture.
Interestingly, the price difference between custom and non-custom furniture isn't always significant. According to Chen, "Top 100 furniture’s custom and non-custom options are generally priced similarly. However, non-custom items often participate in promotional activities, while custom ones typically do not."
China’s custom furniture market holds great potential, but it still lacks a unified regulatory framework, resulting in an unstructured and sometimes chaotic environment. With so many players vying for a share of this emerging market, it's crucial that all businesses act responsibly and contribute to building a sustainable and trustworthy industry. The goal should be to grow together, ensuring long-term success for both consumers and companies alike.
