Burmese rosewood is expected to become the new mainstream of the mahogany furniture market

In recent months, Burmese rosewood (scientific name: Dalbergia sibirica), which was once overlooked, has taken the lead in the rising trend of rosewood prices, surpassing scarlet rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo) and is expected to become the new mainstream in the furniture market. This shift comes as a result of increased demand and limited supply. In June 2023, five species of mahogany, including red rosewood, were listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), making it harder to trade these materials. The growing scarcity of tree species, combined with strict export controls from producing countries, has led to a significant price surge in rosewood products. "Since red rosewood became less available, Burmese rosewood has seen a sharp increase in value and is now considered a viable alternative for furniture," said several industry insiders. According to reports, the price of Burmese rosewood has nearly doubled since October last year. For example, the price of 30-40 cm caliber Burmese rosewood was around 12,000 yuan per ton last summer and has now risen to 28,000 yuan per ton. Previously, during the red rosewood price hikes, this wood became increasingly scarce and shifted from being a commodity to a luxury item for high-end customers, unable to meet the large-scale demand. As a result, many mahogany furniture operators began to look for alternatives. Among the various types of rosewood, Burmese rosewood stood out due to its high appreciation potential. Additionally, the Myanmar government announced an export ban on logs starting April 1, 2014, which triggered a rush among traders to stock up, further driving up the price of Burmese rosewood. Chen Xin, owner of Datang Caohuali Furniture Exhibition Hall on Xianbang Road, one of the earliest dealers of Burmese rosewood in the region, recalls that two years ago, few people paid attention to this material, and only a small number of local dealers were involved. Now, as Burmese rosewood has become the new favorite in the market, many merchants who previously dealt in other types of rosewood have switched their focus. The involvement of large enterprises has also helped elevate the quality and appeal of Burmese rosewood furniture. Chen Sisi noted that middle-income consumers, who make up the majority of the market, are now the main buyers of Burmese rosewood furniture. This type of furniture is known for its natural grain, no visible seams, and a subtle woody fragrance. A set of neutral-toned Burmese rosewood furniture can cost around 100,000 yuan, attracting many young post-80s consumers. With the Spring Festival approaching, inventory in stores is running low, indicating strong demand.
