Long tube respirator assures safe operation of dredgers

There is a group of individuals who have long worked in challenging underground environments, ensuring the smooth flow of water pipes for thousands of households. Their job is not only demanding but also dangerous, and their safety must be prioritized. In response to this, some local authorities, such as the Municipal Facilities Administration Bureau, have introduced advanced technologies to improve the working conditions and safety of sewer workers.

Gas Detectors Monitor Underground Hazards

Recently, a new device labeled "Sewer Flammable and Explosive Gas Monitoring System" was installed above People's Road near a tunnel. This system helps detect harmful gases that could pose serious risks to workers. Before this technology was introduced, workers relied on experience and even smelled the air, which was both uncomfortable and risky. Now, with this equipment, they can monitor gas levels without entering the sewers directly.

The detector works by drawing in gas samples from the sewer pipe. It quickly identifies any changes in gas concentration. If there is an issue, the exhaust pump activates automatically to reduce the risk. If the problem persists, the monitoring center alerts the workers to address the danger promptly. This allows them to focus more on critical tasks rather than routine checks, improving efficiency and safety.

High-Pressure Dredging Vehicles Step In

Previously, when a sewer became clogged, workers had to enter the sewers manually, using shovels to clear blockages. This was labor-intensive and often involved dealing with grease or other stubborn substances that were hard to remove. Now, the introduction of high-pressure dredging vehicles has made the process much faster and safer.

These vehicles are equipped with high-pressure water jets that can break down blockages quickly. Once the location of the blockage is identified, workers simply connect the hose to the vehicle and activate the pump. The powerful jet, combined with the drill bit, can dissolve even tough obstructions in minutes—something that used to take hours.

In addition to the high-pressure system, these vehicles come with tools like hammers and vacuum systems, making them versatile and effective in various situations.

New Tools Enhance Safety and Efficiency

This year, the Municipal Facilities Administration also purchased 5 pipeline periscopes and 4 long-tube respirators. These devices allow workers to inspect the inside of sewers without entering them, reducing exposure to harmful fumes. With the long-tube respirators, they can breathe clean air while working, significantly improving their safety and comfort.

Although these new tools make the job easier, the working environment remains challenging. To further reduce risks, it’s important for everyone to avoid pouring harmful substances into the sewers. By being mindful of our daily habits, we can help protect both the environment and the workers who keep our infrastructure running smoothly. It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
