Blanking is the first step in the casting process. The quality of the blank, including its dimensional accuracy, shape, and section consistency, directly impacts the quality of the final casting and forging. In foreign bearing manufacturing, there are advanced production lines such as high-speed upsetting machines, flat forging machines, and multi-station presses that directly cast bearing rings from bar stock, resulting in fewer blanks and higher precision.
These systems use progressive cutting techniques, where radial compaction and increased shearing speed help improve efficiency. Foreign cutting equipment is highly automated, often featuring loading/unloading, feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and other advanced functions.
Traditional shearing methods, however, are typically open-cut, leading to poor blanking quality. Component differences can be as high as 5%, and end face inclination may exceed 3°. To address these issues, many domestic manufacturers are exploring new techniques.
Most domestic manufacturers currently use a single-point press with a grinding tool for shearing. Improvements in abrasive tools have helped enhance blanking quality. However, challenges like axial turbulence and warping during shearing still exist. To solve this, a sleeve-type shearing die has been introduced. Even when the blade shape matches the cross-section of the bar, the warping and flattening during shearing are significantly reduced, improving overall quality.
In practical applications, cold material differences can be controlled within 1%, with a cutting depth of 0.5mm and end face inclination less than 2°30'. For hot materials, the difference is within 2%, and the end face inclination is under 3°. This method, known as restraining shearing, uses radial compression to control warping, axial movement, and cutting.
Some methods apply pressure at the fixed end, while others do so at both ends. These include cylinder-based or linkage-driven systems, with blades matching the bar's cross-sectional shape. These systems can also be equipped with automatic feeding devices, achieving a component difference of less than 1% and an end face inclination of under 2°.
The use of hot bar cutting machines is also increasing, typically operating in production line mode. These machines use medium-frequency induction heating, automatic feeding, and real-time detection, offering high automation levels. They feature radial compression units, strong structural rigidity, and material adjustment capabilities, significantly improving cutting quality. Shear errors can be kept under 1.5%, and end face inclination remains within 3°.
Band saw blanking, a technique widely used abroad, is now being adopted in China. Band saws offer high rigidity, stable guiding systems, and controlled feeding speeds, ensuring accurate and secure cutting. The resulting blanks are precise, with excellent end face quality and a wide range of sizes.
