From the moment Thomas Jefferson introduced his enslaved cooks to French culinary techniques in 1784, he set a precedent for excellence in the kitchen. Hemings, the first to master these skills, passed them on to his brother Peter, while Edith Fossett and Fanny Hern honed their talents under a French chef in the White House. When Jefferson retired to Monticello in 1809, the new kitchen became a state-of-the-art marvel—a spacious, modernized space equipped with advanced stew stoves imported from Europe. These innovations allowed for precise temperature control, setting a benchmark for efficient cooking methods.
Now fast forward two centuries, and the spirit of Jefferson's vision lives on in an unexpected place: S. Prestley Blake's dream home in Somers, Connecticut. Blake, the co-founder of Friendly’s Ice Cream, embarked on building a replica of Monticello that would not only honor Jefferson’s legacy but also showcase cutting-edge technology and timeless craftsmanship.
The kitchen, which Blake’s wife Helen calls her favorite room in the house, was meticulously crafted by Laplante Construction. Working alongside Vartanian Custom Cabinets and interior designer Jennifer Champigny, they aimed to create something truly extraordinary. Every detail reflects both historical accuracy and modern functionality, blending Jefferson’s ideals with today’s highest standards of design.
Duncan Lomas of Vartanian Custom Cabinets collaborated closely with Clarke, New England’s premier Sub-Zero & Wolf showroom, to select appliances that deliver unparalleled performance. The result? A Wolf Rangetop and Wall Ovens paired with a Wolf Coffee System, ensuring culinary perfection every time. Sub-Zero refrigeration units are seamlessly integrated into drawers and walls, complemented by exquisite cabinetry featuring period-appropriate details. Each piece is crafted by Vartanian’s artisans, bringing a touch of elegance to the heart of the home.

Adding another layer of sophistication, Waterstone Faucets adorn every section of the kitchen. These American-made faucets combine sleek design with superior durability, all handcrafted in California. Their presence on the kitchen island serves as a focal point, enhancing the quartz countertops that mimic the look of marble but offer greater resilience and ease of maintenance.
Clarke is proud to have played a role in this remarkable project. We extend our congratulations to Laplante Construction, Vartanian Custom Cabinets, Jennifer Champigny, and the over 70 suppliers who contributed to its success. Their dedication to excellence has created a masterpiece that pays homage to Jefferson’s legacy while embracing the future.
