Editor's Note: The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) recently launched the "Quality Improvement Service into Enterprises" campaign. As part of this initiative, the national quality inspection system is focusing on key areas, industries, and products to provide targeted quality improvement services for enterprises. In support of this event, this edition introduces a new column titled "Hundreds of Experts Explain 100 Product Qualities." Experts will explain relevant laws, technical standards, and policies related to product quality, helping consumers make informed choices.
Today's Focus: Blockboard
Expert Introduction:
Lu Bin, Director of the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Wood-based Panels and Wood Bamboo Products
Product Overview
Blockboard, commonly known as large core board, is made by coating natural rotary-cut veneer and solid wood boards with rubber and then hot-pressed. It is one of the most popular types of wood-based panels used in decoration and interior design. Blockboards are known for their beautiful appearance, high strength, light weight, and minimal deformation. They are widely used in furniture manufacturing, doors and windows, ceilings, flooring, and wall paneling.
Blockboards typically consist of three parts: the surface plate, the core plate, and the core. The surface plate is the outer layer, the core plate is the middle layer, and the core is the inner structure composed of wooden strips. This layered construction gives blockboards both durability and stability.
Based on usage environment, blockboards are categorized into indoor and outdoor types. Depending on purpose, they can be classified as general or building-grade. Based on the number of layers, they include three-ply, five-ply, and multi-ply boards. Additionally, based on formaldehyde emission levels, they are divided into E0, E1, and E2 grades.
Key Quality Indicators
1. Formaldehyde Emission: According to national standards, E0 grade blockboards must emit ≤0.5mg/L, E1 ≤1.5mg/L, and E2 ≤5.0mg/L. Many substandard blockboards on the market either exceed these limits or falsely claim to meet E1 standards when they only meet E2. This poses serious health risks.
2. Lateral Static Bending Strength: This measures the board’s ability to withstand force and resist deformation. Poor raw materials, improper splicing during production, and weak bonding can all lead to low bending strength.
3. Glue Bond Strength: Gluing performance depends on time, temperature, and pressure. Improper use of adhesives can also affect formaldehyde emissions.
4. Moisture Content: Excessive or uneven moisture content can cause warping or unevenness after installation, affecting overall performance.
Shopping Tips
1. Check the Surface: Look for a smooth, flawless finish. The board should be flat without warping. When standing upright, corners should be straight, and diagonal measurements should not differ by more than 6mm. Each sheet in a stack should fit perfectly.
2. Inspect the Edges: Examine the core plates for uniform thickness, straightness, and tight splicing. Ensure there are no gaps, cracks, or signs of decay. Also, check for excess glue or putty around the edges.
3. Measure the Size: Confirm that the thickness matches the labeled specification.
4. Test the Adhesive: Cut a 75x75mm piece and soak it in 63°C water for 3 hours. If the glue layer separates, the quality may be poor.
5. Assess Environmental Safety: Store unused blockboards in a small room for 24 hours. If there's a strong smell or irritation, formaldehyde levels may be high—consider professional testing.
6. Consider the Price: E1-grade blockboard typically costs over 100 yuan, while E0-grade should be above 130 yuan. Extremely low prices may indicate quality issues.
