Five fungicides have good effect on grape downy mildew

In recent years, grape downy mildew has caused serious damage to vineyards in Tai'an City, Shandong Province. To use pesticides more efficiently, improve disease control, and increase both yield and farmers' income, the Institute of Plant Protection at Shandong Agricultural University and the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Pesticide Toxicology and Applied Technology conducted a field trial from August 8 to August 31, 2012, in a vineyard located in Nanwangjiazhuang, Tianping Office, Daiyue District, Tai'an City. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of different fungicides against grape downy mildew. The test involved eight different fungicide treatments: enoylmorpholine + metalaxyl 30% water-dispersible granules diluted at 600 times, dimethomorph 40% suspension diluted at 600 times, dodecylbenzylammonium chloride 10% aqueous solution diluted at 1000 times, azoxystrobin 25% suspension diluted at 1500 times, mancozeb 80% wettable powder diluted at 800 times, propineb 70% wettable powder diluted at 400 times, aluminum tris(ethylphosphinate) 80% water-dispersible granules diluted at 500 times, and a mixture of mancozeb and manganese zinc 72% water-dispersible granules diluted at 400 times. A standard electric sprayer was used to apply the solutions evenly across the entire plant, ensuring thorough coverage on both sides of the leaves without any wastage. Before the trial, the level of grape downy mildew was moderate. After the final application, the results showed that five of the tested fungicides—enoymorpholine + metalaxyl 30% WDG (600x), dimethomorph 40% SC (600x), mancozeb + manganese zinc 72% WDG (400x), azoxystrobin 25% SC (1500x), and dodecylbenzylammonium chloride 10% AQ (1000x)—achieved a control effect of over 80%, which was significantly better than the traditional agents such as aluminum tris(ethylphosphinate) 80% WDG (500x), mancozeb 80% WP (800x), and propineb 70% WP (400x). Among them, the enoylmorpholine + metalaxyl combination proved to be the most effective. Importantly, none of the tested concentrations caused any visible harm to the grape plants, indicating their safety for use. The pesticide information network advises fruit farmers to pay attention to environmental factors that influence the occurrence of downy mildew. It also recommends rotating fungicides and using mixed formulations to reduce costs and slow the development of resistance. This approach not only improves disease management but also supports sustainable agricultural practices.
