China and France Launch "Sustainable" Nuclear Power Cooperation

China and France Launch "Sustainable" Nuclear Power Cooperation On the 28th, a French Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Fanchan Floriani, announced that the French government is working to clarify its role in the nuclear power industry’s international exports. While emphasizing the need for oversight, he also highlighted that the partnership with China remains "balanced" and "sustainable," noting its strategic importance. In September, the French Nuclear Policy Committee emphasized that the government should play a central role in managing nuclear exports. It stressed that all external dealings of nuclear companies must align with national guidelines. As part of this effort, the committee began reviewing the country's nuclear industry and its key international partners. Floriani reiterated at a press briefing that the cooperation with China is not only important but also strategically significant. He said that EDF and Areva should work closely with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group under the new framework. This collaboration aims to ensure long-term stability and mutual benefits. However, the process hasn’t been without controversy. Earlier this year, French media outlets like *New Observer* and *Road of Ducks* reported that Areva had signed an agreement with China General Nuclear Power without proper government oversight. They claimed that sensitive technology was shared, raising concerns about national security. In response, Erve Machono, executive vice president of EDF, clarified that while an agreement was indeed signed with China General Nuclear Power last November, Areva was not involved due to internal tensions. The deal was later put on hold by the French government. After relations improved, Areva joined negotiations with China Guangdong Nuclear Power, leading to a new tripartite agreement one year later. EDF confirmed that the final agreement received full government approval and did not require additional reporting. It also included strict measures to protect intellectual property rights. The company dismissed concerns about technology leaks as baseless, stressing that all terms were carefully negotiated and monitored.
