In the middle of her pregnancy, Xiao Li, a 26-year-old woman, discovered that both she and her husband were HIV positive. Despite the shocking news, she decided to continue with the pregnancy and give birth to her child. Yesterday morning, after 38 weeks of gestation, she underwent a cesarean section and welcomed her second daughter into the world.

According to Xu Min, the head nurse of obstetrics at Wuhan First Hospital, the couple had come in earlier in the year, with the man explaining that his wife was pregnant and wanted to deliver at their facility. “At first, he seemed very cautious and mentioned that their situation was ‘more special’,†Xu recalled.

Xiao Li and her husband, Da Wei, are from Hubei. Before becoming pregnant, Xiao Li never considered getting tested. She only went for her first prenatal checkup when she was four months pregnant, and she was shocked to learn that she was HIV positive. After further tests confirmed the diagnosis, she initially considered terminating the pregnancy. However, as the baby began moving and responding to her touch, she couldn’t bring herself to give up the child.
Determined to protect her unborn child, Xiao Li and Da Wei sought help from the Hubei Provincial AIDS Clinical Guidance and Training Center at Zhongnan Hospital. There, they learned about preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their baby.
Medical professionals emphasize that for HIV-positive individuals who wish to have children, early antiretroviral treatment is crucial to suppress the virus and minimize transmission risk. Unfortunately, Xiao Li started treatment too late. Although her viral load was not extremely high, the risk of passing the infection to her child remained significant.
“I feel great sympathy for them, and I’m deeply grateful for their honesty,†Xu said. “Being open about their condition allows medical staff to take the necessary precautions and provide the best care possible. It’s also a sign of respect for healthcare workers and the public.â€
