He later revealed that both he and his wife were living with HIV. Xiao Li and her husband, Da Wei (a pseudonym), had not undergone any pre-pregnancy testing. It wasn’t until four months into the pregnancy that she went for her first prenatal checkup and found out she was HIV-positive. After further testing, she considered terminating the pregnancy but changed her mind when she felt the baby move and respond to her touch.
Determined to give her child a chance, she and Da Wei sought help from the Hubei Provincial AIDS Clinical Guidance and Training Center at Zhongnan Hospital. There, they learned about preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission.
According to medical professionals, HIV-positive individuals who wish to become pregnant should undergo antiretroviral therapy before conception to suppress the virus to undetectable levels, significantly reducing the risk of passing it on. However, Xiao Li started treatment too late. Although her viral load was low, the risk of transmitting the virus to her baby remained high.
Xu Min expressed deep sympathy for the couple. “Their honesty allowed us to prepare properly and take effective protective measures,†she said. “It’s also a sign of respect for healthcare workers and the public.â€
