Types of gypsum board and its advantages and disadvantages

(l) Plasterboard

Plasterboard, also known as drywall or gypsum board, is a lightweight construction material made from a core of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two layers of paper. It is known for its light weight, high strength, fire resistance, and ease of installation. Standard plasterboard is commonly used for interior walls, ceilings, and partitions. For areas with higher humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, moisture-resistant and fire-rated versions are available. These can be finished with tiles, metal panels, or plastic veneers, making them ideal for wet environments.

(2) Decorative Plasterboard

Decorative plasterboard is a type of gypsum-based panel that features various patterns, textures, and designs. Made from building gypsum and reinforced with fibers, it offers an attractive and versatile option for interior design. Examples include printed boards, perforated ceiling panels, embossed ceiling boards, and paper-faced decorative panels. These materials are lightweight, fire-resistant, moisture-proof, and easy to install. A newer variant uses resin-coated surfaces with realistic patterns, offering a durable and elegant finish. This type of board is perfect for walls, skirtings, and even as a replacement for natural stone or terrazzo in high-end interiors.

(3) Gypsum Hollow Strip

Gypsum hollow strips are lightweight, hollow-core panels made primarily from building gypsum and sometimes mixed with fillers or fiber materials. Unlike traditional plasterboard, they don’t require paper or adhesive, and they can be installed without a framework. This makes them a fast and efficient choice for interior walls and partitions. Their hollow structure helps reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity, making them popular in modern construction projects.

(4) Fiber Gypsum Board

Fiber gypsum board is produced by combining building gypsum with fiber reinforcement materials. This improves the board’s flexural strength compared to regular plasterboard. It is suitable for interior walls, partitions, and even furniture applications where wood might typically be used. Its durability and versatility make it a practical alternative in both residential and commercial settings.

The production of standard gypsum boards is gradually decreasing, while the demand for decorative and specialized options like sound-absorbing panels, insulation panels, and composite gypsum boards is rising. Additionally, the dimensions of gypsum boards are evolving towards larger sizes and greater thickness, allowing for more flexibility in design and application. Beyond traditional use as a base for wall finishes, gypsum products are now being used in new ways, such as floor tiles, exterior wall substrates, and structural wall cores. This expansion highlights the growing importance of gypsum in modern construction and interior design.
