High-speed rail flying between the alpine valleys BIM helps complete the design challenge

In the southwestern part of China, mountain rivers are abundant, and the landscape is characterized by a mix of high mountains and deep valleys. Ancient poetry often refers to the difficulty of traveling through these areas, with phrases like “difficult to go to the sky” capturing the essence of the terrain. The saying “Guizhou has no three feet flat” vividly illustrates the complex geography of the region. Based in Chengdu, China Railway Second Hospital Engineering Group Co., Ltd. has firsthand experience navigating this challenging environment. Over the past 60 years, its engineering design teams have worked on numerous railway projects, from the Chengdu-Kunming line to the Nanning-Kunming line, the Chongqing-Kunming line, and many others. These projects have left a lasting mark on the development of the company. Today, as the West is being developed with high-speed rail lines, China Railway Second Hospital has embraced advanced technologies such as 3D design and BIM (Building Information Modeling) to enhance efficiency and accuracy. This shift has allowed them to tackle some of the most complex engineering challenges in the region. One such project involves a high-speed railway spanning approximately 515 kilometers, with a design speed of 250 km/h. Due to the rugged terrain, the project features an impressive 81% bridge and tunnel ratio, with 14 special bridges and 180 extra-long tunnels among the 193 total tunnels. This level of complexity presents significant challenges, especially given the short design timeline—just six months for the entire project. Compared to similar projects, this is a major constraint, requiring engineers to quickly compare multiple options and deliver high-quality designs efficiently. To meet these demands, the team turned to BIM technology. Since 2010, the company has been actively developing its 3D design capabilities, forming a dedicated team and collaborating with industry experts. As Zhou Jian, head of the 3D design team, explained, the transition from 2D to 3D design is not just an upgrade—it's a transformation that requires new workflows and processes. BIM has proven to be indispensable in this project. For example, in the CK106-CK172 section, which includes complex mountainous terrain, AutoCAD Civil 3D software enabled dynamic route layout, allowing designers to create intelligent 3D models that automatically update across all related elements. This significantly improved efficiency, reducing the time needed for detailed design work and ensuring accurate data synchronization between different disciplines. In station design, Autodesk Revit was used to integrate multi-professional models, detect conflicts, and provide owners with a more intuitive view of the final outcome. This not only enhanced collaboration but also improved communication and reduced potential construction costs. Despite the progress made, BIM adoption is still evolving at China Railway Second Hospital. According to Dong Fengxiang, the journey has involved learning, trial and error, and growth. While the technology is still in its early stages, the benefits are clear: better design quality, faster delivery, and greater client satisfaction. As the project continues to develop, the company plans to refine local site designs further, including adjustments to the track alignment, special bridge layouts, and detailed station designs. With BIM playing a central role, China Railway Second Hospital is setting a new standard for engineering innovation in one of the most challenging regions of China.
