For over a decade, collecting classical furniture has been more than just an interest — it's become a deep appreciation of its character. Like humans, classical furniture has its own "health," and maintaining it properly ensures it can withstand the test of time.

Chinese classical furniture is traditionally crafted using mortise and tenon joints rather than nails. This makes the wood sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. Therefore, proper placement is crucial. These pieces should be kept away from direct sunlight, but also not in overly dry or damp environments. If exposed to extreme conditions, the wood may crack, warp, or become brittle. Redwood, for instance, is less stable than other hardwoods like rosewood or huanghuali, making it more vulnerable to climate fluctuations. Ideally, the room temperature should stay between 20°C and 30°C, with humidity maintained at 40% to 50%.

Some people believe that classical furniture is prone to scratches. However, it's important to note that wet cloths are actually one of the biggest threats. Water mixed with dust can act like sandpaper, causing fine scratches on the surface. To clean, use a soft, fine brush to gently remove dust, then wipe with a dry cloth made of cotton or linen. After cleaning, applying wax can help protect the surface. But avoid waxing too often — once or twice a month is sufficient. When waxing, follow a methodical approach: start from small areas and gradually move to larger ones, working from light to dark.

Accidents happen, and even the most carefully maintained classical furniture might get dented or scratched. If a dent occurs, try wiping the area with a damp cloth. Let it sit for a while to see if the damage expands due to moisture absorption. If not, place a damp cloth over the dent and use a low-temperature iron to gently heat it, helping the area rise back up. Then smooth it with fine sandpaper. For scratches, apply a thin layer of cod liver oil and let it sit for a day or two before wiping it off.

Most importantly, when collecting and preserving classical furniture, treat it as a living object. This mindset allows the piece to retain its soul and beauty, passing on its unique charm through generations.
