New materials for making large-capacity batteries come out

Japanese researchers announced that they have developed a spongy carbon material with a large number of nano-sized pores in a simple way. This carbon material has a much larger surface area than an equivalent weight of graphite, and if it is used to make an electrode for a battery, the battery capacity can be increased.

Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan placed carbon and manganese alloys in liquid metal crucibles that melted at 800 degrees Celsius. As manganese melted out of the alloy, spongy carbon materials appeared.

This carbon material has pores of several nanometers to several tens of nanometers in size, and has about 180 square meters of surface area per gram of material and 10 times more than graphite powder.

Since carbon is arranged in a regular crystalline structure, the conductivity is the same as that of graphite. This carbon material also has strong corrosion resistance. Therefore, the capacity of a battery made using it will be larger and more durable.

Previously, although some researchers had developed spongy carbon materials, it was difficult to produce them in large quantities due to the production methods. The new method uses alloy pellets to make sponge-like carbon materials, so it is easier to mass produce.

The researchers plan to further increase the surface area of ​​this carbon material and improve its conductivity, while improving the process of melting manganese from the alloy to reduce costs, and strive to provide samples to companies and research institutes after six months.
