Tian Xiaojun, a researcher at the Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, led a team to design a miniature flexible swimming robot. It does not require any wireless communication equipment and batteries, and can be driven and controlled by light. Related results were published online in the Science Report.
The application parts of wireless communication are often complicated, and the size of the required electronic equipment and energy storage equipment limits the degree of miniaturization of the robot. To explore alternative methods, Tian Xiaojun and the team designed and fabricated a miniature flexible swimming robot with a length of only 2.6 cm using a UV-sensitive film containing azobenzene chromophore polymer.
Studies have shown that by periodically flashing ultraviolet and white light, the flagella on the robot will oscillate, pushing it forward in a glass tube filled with liquid. The researchers also demonstrated the use of light signals to control the grips of the robot's head so they could carry the cargo.
According to experts, this design simplifies the robot structure because it does not require batteries, information processing units or motors and transmissions.
