Italy develops all-photon radar

The next-generation Radar (Radio Reconnaissance and Ranging) system is built on software-defined radio technology, offering higher carrier frequencies, compact antenna designs, and broader bandwidths. This makes the system highly adaptable to dynamic environments. Recently, an Italian research team made headlines by publishing a paper in *Nature*, unveiling the first all-photon-based coherent radar system they developed. In the same journal, Jensen McKinney, a researcher from the US Naval Research Laboratory, shared his vision for the future of radar technology. He outlined key challenges that must be addressed before this groundbreaking all-photon radar can be implemented in real-world applications. This innovative radar system is part of the PHODIR program (Photonics-Based All-Digital Radar), which aims to enhance the accuracy of target tracking and speed measurement in current electronic signal systems. A major challenge with traditional systems is their inability to handle high-frequency signals without introducing excessive noise, which degrades signal clarity. To overcome this, scientists are exploring the use of more stable laser signals. One of the main obstacles in building a laser-based radar system is maintaining a stable phase relationship between optical oscillations. According to a recent report from the Physicist Organization Network, the researchers used a mode-locked laser to generate a sequence of ultra-stable laser pulses with minimal timing jitter. These pulses were connected to a custom-built computer system, along with a filter and a photodiode, allowing them to produce low-noise radio frequency (RF) signals. Although this all-photon radar system is still in its prototype stage, it has already proven functional. The team tested it by monitoring the takeoff of an aircraft at a nearby airport, comparing the results with data from conventional electronic radar systems. The findings matched closely, demonstrating the system's potential. McKinney emphasized that this was just an initial test, and further research and real-world testing are necessary to determine whether this new system truly outperforms existing technologies. ![Common radars that are widely used today have great limitations in target monitoring.](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/20/14/03/280952_85192800.jpg)
