As the new year begins, the home improvement season has officially kicked off. While homeowners are preparing to purchase bulk building materials, they’ve noticed that some home construction material markets have already started rising. According to reports, many building material brands are planning price hikes in March, with increases ranging from 5% to 10%. This trend is evident across a wide range of products, including wooden doors, flooring, cabinets, sanitary ware, and furniture.
For example, one well-known brand of wooden doors saw its price jump from 1,380 yuan to 1,460 yuan after the Spring Festival—representing a 5.7% increase. Another popular brand’s 1.5-meter solid wood bed, which was previously priced at 3,200 yuan, may soon rise to around 3,500 yuan, an increase of nearly 9.3%. Industry insiders say this surge is mainly due to rising costs of raw materials and logistics.
The underlying causes of this widespread price increase are multifaceted. Analysts point out that the primary driver is the soaring production costs. Prices for essential raw materials such as coal, petroleum, bamboo lumber, metal, and PVC have all climbed, pushing overall manufacturing costs higher. As a result, companies are passing these increased expenses onto consumers.
Additionally, labor costs have also risen significantly. A senior executive from a leading door and window brand explained, “After the Spring Festival, our labor costs increased by 3%, which is the biggest contributor to the price hike in our door and window products.†He also mentioned that the factory is facing a tough time finding workers this year, further increasing labor expenses. Although prices haven’t gone up yet, he believes it's just a matter of time before more adjustments occur.
Homeowners are feeling the pressure too. Ms. Wang, who is currently renovating her home, said, “Last month I saw a bed priced at 2,980 yuan, but I hesitated and didn’t buy it. When I came back this month, the price had already gone up to 3,035 yuan—I felt really regretful!†Meanwhile, Mr. Cui, another homeowner, decided to act early. “Although the house won’t be ready until the second half of the year, we’ve already ordered all our materials,†he said. It seems that many homeowners are trying to avoid the economic burden of rising prices by making purchases ahead of time.
