Why the front end of HD surveillance must be a high-definition network camera?

We know that traditional standard definition monitoring is divided into three types: analog, digital and network. The front end of the analog surveillance is an analog camera, and the back end is a matrix. The front end of digital surveillance is also an analog camera, and the back end is DVR. There are two types of front-end for network monitoring, one is analog camera + video encoder, one is network camera, and the back-end is platform. In other words, in the era of standard-definition monitoring, there are many types of front-end analog cameras, network cameras, video encoders + analog cameras.

Why in the era of high-definition surveillance, the front end must be high-definition network cameras? The reasons are mainly in two aspects.

First, high-definition monitoring must be networked, and it must be based on video compression processing and transmission through the IP network, because only in this way can the transmission cost of high-definition video be controlled.

The uncompressed high-definition video signal has two transmission modes, analog and digital. Analog transmission generally adopts YPbPr component transmission, and one high-definition video signal requires three coaxial cables to be transmitted simultaneously. Digital transmission generally adopts DVI, HDMI or HD-SDI transmission. The transmission distance of DVI or HDMI is only a few meters, which is not suitable for monitoring transmission. Although HD-SDI can transmit about 100 meters, the requirements for coaxial cables are very high The price of the cable is also very expensive. Regardless of analog or digital transmission, the transmission cost of uncompressed high-definition video signals is significantly higher than previous analog standard-definition video signals. When using video compression encoding and transmission over an IP network, the difference in transmission cost between high-definition video and standard-definition video is small.

Second, the efficiency and cost of directly using the high-definition network camera for front-end processing is more advantageous than using the high-definition video encoder + high-definition camera.

The current high-definition video sensor is mainly CMOS, and the CMOS sensor directly outputs the digital video signal. The digital high-definition video signal is directly compressed and encoded by the DSP or ASIC in the camera, and then transmitted in a networked manner. It is economical and more efficient.

This is why all the high-definition surveillance front-ends we can see on the market are high-definition network cameras.
