Traditional thread processing methods typically rely on thread turning tools, taps, and dies for manual threading. However, with the advancement of CNC machining technology—especially the development of three-axis CNC systems—an improved method known as thread milling has emerged. This technique offers significant advantages over conventional methods in terms of precision, efficiency, and flexibility. Unlike traditional approaches, thread milling is not restricted by thread geometry or rotation direction during the cutting process. For example, a single thread milling cutter can machine threads in various directions, both internal and external. It is especially useful for complex or hard-to-reach threads that cannot be machined using standard tapping or die-cutting techniques. Threads with no clearance or undercut structures, which are challenging for traditional methods, can be easily handled through CNC milling. Additionally, thread milling cutters tend to last much longer—often ten times or more than traditional taps—making them more cost-effective in the long run. Adjusting thread diameter size during the milling process is also significantly easier, offering greater control and adaptability in production.
