The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) recently released a white paper entitled "Quality of Imported Food Contact Products in 2013". Last year, a total of 1192 batches of unqualified imported food contact products were detected nationwide. The unqualified rate was 4.2%, and the value of unqualified products was about $12.037 million.
Food contact products mainly refer to utensils, kitchen utensils and other products that are in direct contact with food in daily life, because they are in direct contact with food or human mouth, and are closely related to the health of consumers.
In 2013, the national inspection and quarantine institutions at all levels inspected a total of 28,365 batches of imported food contact products, with a value of 737 million US dollars; an increase of 90.5% compared with the 2012 batch, and the value of goods increased by 209.2%, the largest increase in recent years. Sources of imported food contact products mainly include the United States, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Italy, Germany, Taiwan, Switzerland and other countries or regions.
The problems of unqualified imported food contact products mainly include identification labels, safety and health items, appearance quality, and unqualified physical and chemical properties. The inspection and quarantine institutions have done to destroy or return the unqualified products of the safety and health projects.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine recommends that trade parties should strictly follow the requirements of China's relevant product technical specifications. When importing food contact products, it is necessary to ensure product quality, and also to regulate product labeling to avoid unnecessary losses. Some of the current hygiene standards for food containers and food packaging materials in China have not adapted to the development of the industry and market needs, and the access and management mechanisms for food contact products manufactured by new materials are not sound enough. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine also recommended that relevant departments improve the standards and testing methods of various food contact products as soon as possible.
