Pay attention to snow and lightning protection in Yushu disaster area

From 5 pm on the 19th, scattered snowflakes intermittently floated in the Yushu earthquake-stricken area. The reporter learned from the Yushu Prefecture Meteorological Bureau that from the early morning of the 20th, there will be showers turning into sleet, which may cause icing on the plateau roads, and vehicles for disaster relief materials transportation should pay attention to prevent traffic accidents.

Zeren Tashi, deputy director of the Yushu Prefecture Meteorological Bureau, said the monitoring showed that from 19 to 21, Yushu was small to moderately snowy. The maximum temperature will drop from 18 degrees Celsius to about 13 degrees Celsius, and the night temperature drop will be around 1 degree Celsius. There is sleet during the night from the 21st to the 22nd.

In the next three days, the rescue lifeline 214 National Road leading to Yushu may experience moderate to heavy snow on the roads on the north and south sides of the Bayan Hara Mountains, with a temperature drop of 4 to 10 degrees Celsius and wind power of 5 to 6 levels. Bayan Kala Pass is a necessary place for rescue vehicles from Xining to Yushu, with an elevation of 4824 meters.

During the five-day interview with reporters in Yushu, the weather in the disaster-stricken area was mostly sunny, with slightly cloudy and short snowy weather. The temperature difference between day and night is large, the maximum temperature during the day is around 18 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature at night is reduced to minus zero. In addition, the dust from the spring winds permeated this small town on the plateau, and medical staff warned that the floating dust may endanger human health.

Zeren Tashi said that Yushu will enter the thunderstorm season in May, and the temporary centralized resettlement sites for the affected people must be strictly guarded. The Meteorological Administration has prepared 100 simple lightning rods, which will be installed at the main settlement point as soon as possible. The Bureau of Meteorology will also introduce standards for the use and installation of tents and panel houses within a week to prevent lightning from hurting people through the metal frame. The Lightning Protection Center will also issue a Tibetan-Chinese bilingual manual on lightning protection knowledge.

Wang Xin, deputy director of the Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Bureau, who is directing disaster prevention on the spot, said that Yushu is in a mountainous area and there are many geological hazard risk areas. The arrival of the rainy season in June is likely to cause natural disasters such as landslides. Once unfavorable weather is monitored, the Meteorological Administration will inform the Earthquake Relief Command and immediately arrange the affected people to stay away from the danger zone.

After the earthquake occurred on April 14, Yan Xingzhou weather forecaster climbed out of the rubble and quickly rushed to the unit to make a weather report regardless of the waist injury, ensuring that the weather forecast was broadcast on time. Since then, the meteorological department provided meteorological information to the Yushu Earthquake Relief Headquarters twice a day to provide disaster-relief and emergency rescue decision-making reference without interruption.

The China Meteorological Administration and the Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Administration allocated relief materials as soon as possible after the earthquake, and added technical power to ensure the meteorological monitoring and forecasting work in the disaster areas.
