NASA develops 3D printer capable of producing "nutritious and delicious" food

If NASA wants to send people to Mars, it must prepare enough food for this mission that may last several years. NASA's "ultimate" solution is to use a 3D printer to cook for astronauts. NASA has invested money to support this study.

The U.S. "Washington Post" reported on the 22nd that NASA has selected the Texas-based system and material research company to invest 125,000 U.S. dollars in the development of a 3D printer capable of producing "nutritious and delicious" food for astronauts.

It is envisaged that such a 3D printer will mix various powders according to "digital recipes" to produce foods with aromas and colors.

NASA is scheduled to announce the details of this project this week. Anjan Contract, the project manager, systems and materials research company engineer, explained the project's inspiration earlier this month that he had used a 3D printer to print chocolate for his wife.

The test of printing chocolate prompted systems and materials research companies to consider what other foods could be printed. Space food printers do not exist yet and are still at the conceptual stage. Systems and materials research companies hope that by the end of this year, this will no longer be a paper discussion.

NASA spokesman David Steetz wrote in an e-mail statement that the current aerospace food system's task of reaching a long-term battle, such as reaching Mars, is not only inadequate but also unacceptable.

At this stage, astronauts carry pre-packaged foods, that is, instant foods consumed by the military. This kind of food not only tastes bad, but has a few types and it's biased. It is envisaged that food made by 3D printers can be customized for each astronaut's nutritional needs, health status and taste.

Systems and Materials Research Inc. proposes that all nutrients, such as protein and carbohydrates, made into astronauts' foods will be stored in boxes in powder form. When the astronaut chooses a recipe, all the necessary ingredients will enter a compartment, mixed with water and oil.

The mixture is then heated and sprayed onto a hot base. The food is formed layer by layer on this base until freshly baked.

David Irwin, director of research at the Systems and Materials Research company, said that pizza is the kind of thing that has "a solid bottom, a soft center, and a top like meat."

Theoretically, if an astronaut misses home, he can even eat food made according to his mother's love recipes. The printer can contact the earth and receive personalized cooking instructions or recipes. Contract said: "Mother can design a cookie on the computer and send the cookies to the shuttle. Her son or daughter can print this cookie on Christmas Day."

NASA said that the idea of ​​cooking on a 3D printer is quite fascinating, not only because it can reduce the weight of the spacecraft, but also because other technologies such as tools can be manufactured using similar technologies.
