Recently, the Cao Sizhao molybdenum deposit in Xinghe County, Inner Mongolia, has made headlines after a successful field test by geological experts. This project, led by the Geological Survey of Inner Mongolia, has revealed an impressive preliminary estimate of 2.2 billion tons of molybdenum ore, with 1.76 million tons of molybdenum content, marking it as a super-large deposit.
According to officials from the Inner Mongolia Land and Resources Department, the Cao Sizhao deposit is not only of high quality but also shallow in depth, with thick ore bodies that are easy to mine. These characteristics make it highly promising for future development and utilization.
Located in Wulanchabu City’s Xinghe County, the Cao Sizhao molybdenum deposit lies just 5 kilometers away from the county center. Its exploration area spans 38.99 square kilometers, making it one of the key areas for mineral exploration in Inner Mongolia.
Since 2010, the Inner Mongolia Geological Survey has invested 53.38 million yuan into the project. Through extensive drilling—totaling 34,614.53 meters—the team has gained a clear understanding of the ore body's distribution, size, shape, and grade variations.
In addition to molybdenum, the project has also identified four lead-zinc ore bodies. Initial estimates suggest approximately 19,400 tons of lead and zinc resources, with average grades of 0.27% for lead and 2.22% for zinc.
Molybdenum plays a vital role in the production of high-performance alloy steels. Even a small amount of molybdenum can significantly enhance the hardness and toughness of steel. Beyond metallurgy, molybdenum compounds are widely used in chemical reagents, pharmaceuticals, fuels, and lubricants, further highlighting its industrial importance.
This discovery could have significant implications for China's mineral resource security and economic development.
