Inner Mongolia explores super-large molybdenum deposits

Inner Mongolia explores super-large molybdenum deposits Recently, a significant breakthrough has been made in the exploration of the Cao Sizhao molybdenum deposit located in Xinghe County, Inner Mongolia. The project, led by the Geological Survey of Inner Mongolia, has undergone field testing by a panel of experts, revealing promising results. Preliminary estimates suggest that the deposit contains approximately 2.2 billion tons of molybdenum ore and 1.76 million tons of molybdenum, marking it as one of the largest molybdenum reserves in the region. According to officials from the Inner Mongolia Land and Resources Department, the Cao Sizhao deposit is not only high-quality but also shallowly buried, with a thick ore body that makes it easy to extract. This makes it highly attractive for future development and utilization. The site is located just 5 kilometers from Xinghe County, and its total exploration area spans 38.99 square kilometers, making it an important target for mineral resource development in the region. Since 2010, the Inner Mongolia Geological Survey has invested over 53.38 million yuan into the project. Through extensive drilling campaigns—covering a total of 34,614.53 meters—the team has gained a comprehensive understanding of the ore body’s distribution, size, shape, and grade variations. These findings have provided a solid foundation for further exploration and potential commercialization. In addition to molybdenum, the project has also identified four lead-zinc ore bodies. Initial estimates suggest a combined reserve of 19,400 tons of lead and zinc, with average grades of 0.27% for lead and 2.22% for zinc. This dual-resource potential enhances the economic value of the site. Molybdenum plays a crucial role in the production of high-performance alloy steels, where even small additions can significantly improve hardness, toughness, and heat resistance. Beyond metallurgy, molybdenum compounds are widely used in chemical reagents, pharmaceuticals, fuels, and lubricants, highlighting its importance across various industries. This discovery underscores Inner Mongolia's growing significance in China’s mineral resource sector, offering both economic opportunities and strategic advantages for future industrial development.
