China's coal imports 260 million tons in the first three quarters

China's coal imports 260 million tons in the first three quarters In the first ten months of 2013, China imported a total of 260 million tons of coal, marking a significant 17.3% increase compared to the same period in 2012. However, the average import price fell by 13.1% year-on-year to $89.8 per ton, indicating a shift in market dynamics and possibly stronger competition from other suppliers. On the export side, China's coal exports during the same period totaled 6.31 million tons, reflecting a decline of 1.58 million tons or 20% compared to the previous year. The total value of these exports dropped sharply to $908.92 million, down from $1.36695 billion in the first ten months of 2012—a decrease of 34.1%. This suggests that Chinese coal was facing increased global competition and potentially weaker demand from key markets. In October alone, China exported 400,000 tons of hard coal and lignite, a drop of 9.1% year-on-year and 18.37% compared to the previous month. Despite this, the value of coal exports reached $55.828 million, showing some resilience in the sector. Meanwhile, the export of coke and semi-coke showed a more positive trend. From January to October, China shipped 3.24 million tons of coke and semi-coke, a rise of 2.33 million tons or 2.57 times compared to the same period in 2012. The total value of these exports reached $787.116 million, up 96% year-on-year, highlighting strong performance in this segment. In October, China exported 520,000 tons of coke and semi-coke, an increase of 210,000 tons compared to the previous month. The export value for the month stood at $116.452 million, reinforcing the momentum seen in this particular category of coal products. Overall, the data reflects a complex picture of China’s coal trade in 2013, with strong growth in coke and semi-coke exports counterbalancing the decline in raw coal exports. The import volume continued to grow, but at a lower price, which could signal shifting supply chains and pricing pressures in the global coal market.
