Processing multiple types of flywheel signal teeth with CNC milling machine

Modern engine components are becoming increasingly diverse, and with the growing popularity of electronic fuel injection (EFI) engines, flywheels now commonly feature signal teeth. These signal teeth come in various shapes and sizes, making it difficult for traditional gear hobbing machines to keep up with the demand. Traditional methods struggle to adapt to the current production trends that emphasize multi-variety and small-batch manufacturing. As a result, CNC milling has become a more widely used technique in this field. This article explores the characteristics and practical applications of CNC milling in machining flywheel signal teeth. **1. CNC Milling Hardware** CNC milling equipment typically includes a CNC milling machine or a machining center, along with an indexing head (as shown in Figure 1a). For cutting the signal teeth, a three-sided milling cutter is often used (see Figure 1b).

**2. Several Types of Flywheel Signal Teeth Suitable for CNC Milling** (1) High-power flywheels often have 58 narrow signal teeth and one wide signal tooth (as seen in Figure 2). Because these teeth are not evenly spaced, they cannot be produced using conventional hobbing machines. With CNC milling, however, it is possible to precisely position and shape any number of signal teeth with varying widths, offering greater flexibility and precision compared to traditional methods.

In addition to high-power flywheels, other types of signal teeth such as those with irregular patterns, asymmetrical designs, or custom configurations also benefit from CNC milling. This technology allows for precise control over tooth geometry, ensuring consistent quality even in complex designs. It also reduces setup time and increases production efficiency, making it ideal for modern manufacturing environments that require quick changes and high customization. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the role of CNC milling in producing advanced engine components will only grow.
