Modern engine components are becoming increasingly diverse, and with the growing adoption of EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engines, flywheels typically feature signal teeth. These signal teeth come in various shapes and configurations, making it difficult for traditional gear hobbing machines to meet the required precision and flexibility. Traditional methods struggle to adapt to the demands of multi-variety, small-batch production, which has led to a rise in the use of CNC milling for machining these components. This article explores the features, advantages, and practical applications of CNC milling in the context of flywheel signal tooth manufacturing.
**1. CNC Milling Hardware**
CNC milling equipment includes a CNC milling machine or a machining center, along with an indexing head (as shown in Figure 1a). The cutting tools used are typically three-sided end mills (see Figure 1b), which are well-suited for creating precise and complex tooth profiles.

**2. Flywheel Signal Teeth Suitable for CNC Milling** There are several types of flywheel signal teeth that benefit from CNC milling technology. One example is the high-power flywheel, which features 58 narrow signal teeth and one wide signal tooth (as seen in Figure 2). Because the teeth are not evenly spaced, they cannot be produced using conventional hobbing techniques. With CNC milling, however, it's possible to accurately position and shape any number of signal teeth, regardless of their size or spacing.Figure 2
In addition to high-power flywheels, other custom-designed signal tooth patterns—such as those with irregular spacing, varying widths, or unique angular arrangements—are also ideal candidates for CNC milling. This technology offers greater flexibility, precision, and efficiency compared to traditional methods, making it a preferred choice for modern manufacturing environments.
