China’s coal import volume reached 260 million tons between January and October 2013, marking a year-on-year growth of 17.3%. However, the average import price fell to $89.8 per ton, reflecting a decline of 13.1% compared to the same period in 2012. This trend highlights a mix of increased demand and falling prices during the period.
In contrast, coal exports saw a significant drop, with total exports reaching 6.31 million tons from January to October. This represents a decrease of 1.58 million tons, or 20%, compared to the same period in 2012. The value of these exports also dropped sharply, totaling $908.92 million—down 34.1% from $1.36695 billion in the first ten months of 2012.
Looking at the month of October specifically, coal exports totaled 400,000 tons, a 9.1% decrease year-on-year and 18.37% lower than the previous month. The export value for that month was $55.828 million, indicating a continued downward trend in coal exports.
However, there was positive growth in the export of coke and semi-coke. From January to October, China exported 3.24 million tons of these products, a significant increase of 2.33 million tons, or 2.57 times the volume from the same period in 2012. The value of these exports reached $787.116 million, showing a 96% year-on-year rise.
In October alone, coke and semi-coke exports rose by 210,000 tons compared to the previous month, reaching 520,000 tons. The export value for the month was $116.452 million, further underscoring the strong performance in this sector.
Overall, while coal imports remained robust, coal exports faced challenges, with some sectors like coke and semi-coke showing strong growth. These figures reflect the complex dynamics of China's coal market during the first ten months of 2013.
