Three sensitive areas and six restricted areas for home improvement

In home renovation, there are certain areas that should never be touched or altered without proper guidance. These "forbidden zones" are critical to the structural integrity and safety of your home. If you unknowingly tamper with them, it could lead to serious damage not only to your property but also to your neighbors’. On the other hand, some areas are considered "sensitive," meaning even though they aren’t strictly off-limits, any changes should be made carefully and ideally by a professional. One such sensitive area is the traditional squat toilet found in older homes. If you're considering replacing it with a modern toilet, you need to be cautious. The layout of the plumbing is usually different—squat toilets are front-vented, while regular toilets are rear-vented. This means changing the toilet could require reworking the entire drainage system, which can be complicated and risky if not done properly. It may also damage the original waterproofing layer, leading to leaks or improper flushing. Another key area to be careful with is the heating and gas pipelines. Any work involving gas lines must be handled by licensed professionals from the gas company. You should never attempt to cover or modify meters during renovation. Similarly, heating pipes shouldn't be moved unless absolutely necessary, as their placement directly affects how warm your home stays during winter. Improper modifications could result in poor heating or even dangerous situations. Old steel windows are another common issue. Some homeowners replace them with aluminum alloy windows for aesthetic reasons. However, some cheaper options might use thin profiles that are less durable than the original steel. In high-rise buildings, this can lead to problems like window detachment, which poses a serious safety risk. When it comes to "forbidden areas" in renovation, load-bearing walls are at the top of the list. These walls support the structure of the building and cannot be removed or modified without expert consultation. Determining whether a wall is load-bearing can be tricky. In brick-and-concrete buildings, most walls over 24 cm thick are load-bearing, and any openings or alterations must be approved by the property management before proceeding. Reinforcement bars inside walls are also crucial. They act like the bones of a building, providing strength and stability. Damaging them during drilling or piping installation can weaken the structure, especially in seismic zones where the risk of collapse increases significantly. Beams and columns in the house are equally important. Removing or altering them could cause the upper floor slab to fall, creating a major safety hazard. Similarly, the low wall below the balcony window—known as the "counterweight wall"—should not be disturbed. Removing it could compromise the balcony's structural integrity and potentially cause it to collapse. Doors with "three-proof" or "five-proof" features are embedded into concrete and are part of the building’s structural framework. Altering them can damage the surrounding structure and make it difficult to install new doors later. Lastly, the waterproof layer in bathrooms and kitchens is essential to prevent water damage. If damaged, it can lead to leaks downstairs. When changing flooring materials, take extra care not to puncture the waterproof layer. If it’s damaged, a 24-hour leak test is required to ensure everything is sealed properly. Always consult with a professional before making any major changes in your home. Your safety and the longevity of your property depend on it.
