After the bearing installation is complete, it's essential to perform a thorough inspection to ensure everything is set up correctly. For smaller machinery, you can manually rotate the shaft to check for smooth operation and any resistance. During this process, look for signs of foreign objects, scratches, or indentations that might affect performance. Also, check if the torque generated by the housing is stable. If the clearance is too small, or there are issues with alignment or seal interference, it could lead to excessive torque. If no abnormalities are found, you can proceed to start the power. For larger equipment, manual rotation isn't feasible, so after a no-load start, the machine should be allowed to idle. During this phase, listen for unusual vibrations, noises, or any contact between rotating parts. Once everything appears normal, you can begin the actual operation. During power operation, start with no-load at low speed and gradually increase the load according to the specified conditions. Monitor the test process carefully—check for any abnormal sounds, changes in bearing temperature, leakage, or discoloration of the lubricant. It’s also important to visually inspect the machine periodically, and if necessary, remove the bearing for a closer examination. Bearing temperature is typically estimated based on the external temperature of the housing. However, for more accurate readings, use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the outer ring through the oil hole. The temperature should rise gradually during initial operation and stabilize after about 1–2 hours. If the temperature rises sharply or becomes abnormally high, it may indicate issues such as excessive lubricant, insufficient clearance, poor alignment, or seal conflicts. High-speed operation can also contribute to overheating due to improper bearing arrangement or incorrect lubricant selection. Abnormal sounds from the bearing can be identified using a stethoscope. Unusual noises like strong metallic sounds, irregular patterns, or strange vibrations can signal problems such as poor lubrication, misalignment of the shaft or housing, damaged bearings, or the presence of foreign particles.
