Dalian Institute of Lithium-sulfur battery electrolyte material research progress

Recently, Zhang Huamin, Li Xianfeng, and associate researcher Zhang Hongzhang, researchers of the Department of Energy Storage Technology of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, used the “low Ksp inhibition effect” to immobilize lithium polysulfide and “interfacial polymerization filming effect” to protect metal lithium. An electrolyte solution with high stability, high safety, and high capacity has been prepared and its application in lithium-sulfur battery devices has been realized. The relevant research results were published in Nano Energy (2017, 39, 262-272).

Lithium-sulfur batteries are one of the current international research hotspots due to their high energy density and low cost. Lithium sulfide's "shuttle effect" and metallic lithium "interface instability" are key challenges for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Researchers have been using lithium nitrate additives to solve the above problems. However, lithium nitric acid, carbon black, and elemental sulfur coexist in the battery system. The research team has for the first time designed a type of lithium-free high-performance electrolyte that combines low lithium polysulfide solubility (Ksp), high lithium ion conductivity, high elemental sulfur utilization, and excellent metals. Lithium interface stability. The 4000 mAh lithium-sulfur battery device assembled with the electrolyte can achieve a specific power of 60 Wkg-1, a specific energy of 350 Whkg-1, and a stable circulation of more than 30 times. This technology is expected to make the solar unmanned aircraft fly continuously. 1 month. This work provides new ideas for the design and preparation of lithium sulfur battery electrolyte materials.
