44.5% photoelectric conversion efficiency! The world's most efficient solar cell is about to be born

According to reports, American scientists have designed a new solar cell and created a model. This solar cell incorporates multiple cells that are stacked into a single device that captures almost all of the energy of the solar spectrum, converts 44.5% of direct sunlight into electricity, and has the potential to become the most efficient solar cell in the world. Most solar cells have a photoelectric conversion efficiency of only 25%.

Unlike our common solar panels on the roof or in the fields, the new solar cell design method uses a concentrating solar cell (CPV) panel that concentrates the sun's rays on tiny solar cells (less than 1 square millimeter in area). There are two most important advantages. First, its base is from the GaSb material family. This material is widely used in infrared lasers and photodetectors. The Sb-based solar cells are assembled into a stacked structure, just like filters that filter sunlight, and each layer has specialized materials that absorb specific wavelengths of energy. Second, this stacking process uses so-called transfer printing technology that enables these small devices to be assembled stereoscopically together.

The study's lead author, Matthew Broom at George Washington University, said: "In direct sunlight reaching the Earth's surface, 99% of the energy lies between wavelengths of 250 and 2500 nanometers, but traditional high-efficiency multi-junction solar cells The material cannot capture all of the energy in the entire spectral range, and the new device can."

Currently, this special type of solar cell is expensive due to its expensive materials. However, researchers believe that it is very important for studying the upper limit of photoelectric conversion efficiency. It is expected to reduce costs in the future, and the development of cheaper similar products is expected to enter the market.
