This progress came just two years after Toshiba first reported an efficiency of 7.7% for a 5cm square OPV module and 9.2% for its unit cells in September 2012. The recent improvement was driven by the development of a proprietary p-type organic semiconductor material capable of capturing longer wavelengths of light. The company also introduced an inverted structure design, which is known to enhance performance and stability.
Although the manufacturing process remained largely consistent with the one used in 2012—still relying on the "Meniscus Coating" technique—Toshiba leveraged advanced simulation tools to optimize the component's internal structure. This allowed them to significantly improve the fill factor (FF), a key parameter that directly impacts overall efficiency.
