French brand creative design company Substance recently transformed a French restaurant in Hong Kong, blending street art with the dining experience. At Bibo, artworks by Invader, JR, and Mr. Brainwash—collaborating with Banksy, Damien Hirst, and Daniel Arsham—have created a unique atmosphere that merges contemporary street culture with classic French cuisine. The space also serves as a creative studio, regularly hosting international artists for independent projects. Located in an old building on Hollywood Street, the restaurant retains the elegance of a 1930s French salon, featuring luxurious marble floors and refined lighting. This historic structure, once the regional headquarters of the French trading company Industrial Bank (CGFT), has been revitalized into Bibo. Vintage furniture, train timetables, and discarded tickets have been incorporated into the design, adding character and history to the space. Designers from around the world gather here to enjoy meals and exchange ideas. The design of Bibo Restaurant seamlessly integrates modern aesthetics with street culture. Brass pipes from subway ventilation systems, intricate lighting resembling train signals, and materials used in the bar are all examples of innovative design choices. "The challenge was to create a restaurant that combines street art with classic French meals," said Maxime Dautresme, Creative Director at Substance. "The client is both a connoisseur and collector of contemporary art, and he wanted to showcase his collection in this space." Dautresme emphasized the importance of innovation, aiming to perfectly blend street art, French cuisine, and the dining environment. "We positioned the design in the 1930s—a time of artistic experimentation. It complements French cuisine while creating an elegant and comfortable atmosphere." He added, "I want to merge the spirit of the times, street art, and French cuisine. Street artists often begin their careers on trains and trams, and they like to occupy abandoned spaces for creation. This building has a rich history and is part of the city’s identity. What if it were transformed into a vibrant office for a French transportation company?" "Our requirements are simple: we don’t constantly update the decor. We want to bring in enough creativity and new ideas for the food," Dautresme concluded. The result is a space where art, history, and culinary excellence come together, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for guests.
