Low-key luxury connotation Bibo restaurant

French brand creative design company Substance recently renovated a French restaurant in Hong Kong, blending street art with the dining environment. In Bibo, an artistic collaboration between artists like Invader, JR, and Mr. Brainwash, alongside renowned figures such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, and Daniel Arsham, has created a unique dining experience. The space also serves as a creative studio, frequently hosting international artists for independent projects. Located in an old building on Hollywood Street, Bibo retains the style of a 1930s French salon, featuring luxurious marble floors and elegant lighting. The integration of street art and traditional design breathed new life into this former regional headquarters of the French trading company Industrial Bank (CGFT). Old furniture, train timetables, and discarded tickets have been incorporated into the decor, making it a gathering place for designers from around the world to share ideas and enjoy meals. The restaurant's design merges contemporary street culture with modern aesthetics. Brass pipes from subway ventilation systems, intricate lighting resembling train signals, and materials used in the bar all reflect the creative vision behind the space. "The challenge was to create a restaurant that combines street art with classic French cuisine," said Maxime Dautresme, Creative Director at Substance Creative Design. "The client is both a connoisseur and collector of contemporary art, and he wanted to showcase his collection here. We needed innovation—how to seamlessly integrate street art, French food, and the dining environment. I believe positioning the design in the 1930s, a time of artistic experimentation, was the right choice. It complements French cuisine while creating an elegant and comfortable atmosphere." Dautresme continued, "I want to combine the spirit of the times, street art, and French cuisine. Street artists often start their careers on trains and trams, and they love to occupy abandoned buildings and construction sites. They use surface-level art to express their ideas. This building has a sense of history and is part of the city. What if we transformed it into a vibrant hub for the French transportation company?" "Our requirements were simple: we don’t constantly update the decor. Street artists also recognize the restaurant, so we need to bring in enough creativity and fresh ideas for the food."
