The world's largest helium device officially opened

Recently, Air Liquide, the world's leading supplier of industrial, health, and environmental gases, has unveiled what is now considered the largest helium purification and liquefaction plant globally. This state-of-the-art facility has an annual capacity of approximately 38 million cubic meters and utilizes advanced patented technology to purify and liquefy helium at ultra-low temperatures (-269°C) using liquid air. The official opening of this project marks a significant milestone in stabilizing the global helium market, which has long been subject to supply fluctuations. The plant is located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, and is operated by RasGas, a major Qatari energy company. With the new facility, the company's total helium production capacity has reached around 58 million cubic meters per year, making Qatar the world's largest producer of helium. Together with its partner, Qatargas, Qatar accounts for about 25% of the world’s helium production capacity, solidifying its position as a key player in the global gas market. Air Liquide has entered into a long-term contract with both RasGas and Qatargas, under which it will purchase helium that represents 50% of the plant's total output. This partnership ensures that Air Liquide remains one of the top suppliers of helium on the global stage, supporting industries ranging from medical imaging to semiconductor manufacturing. The launch of this facility not only strengthens Qatar’s role in the global helium supply chain but also highlights the growing importance of helium in various high-tech applications. As demand for helium continues to rise, such large-scale projects are becoming essential in meeting global needs while ensuring stable and sustainable supply. This development underscores the strategic collaboration between leading energy companies and technological innovators in addressing the challenges of resource scarcity and market volatility. With this new plant, Air Liquide and its partners are setting a new standard for helium production and distribution worldwide. [Editor: Chen Guofang]
