In early November, technology giant Apple applied for a patent for an energy management system using portable solar photovoltaic panels from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The Apple system will enable solar power for the iPhones, Macbooks, and iPod touch, eliminating the need to plug into a power outlet. Using solar power will help devices that currently rely on power and charging power outlets.
The system AC-DC adapter will receive the direct current (DC) of the solar photovoltaic panels, as well as the AC power of the system microcontroller (SMC), so the device can use both solar power and adapters. Its use of existing technologies, including Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), will not use a switching circuit that allows the adapter and solar power to be used simultaneously to power the device or charge the battery.
Apple is one of the mainstream technologies and power companies that support solar power generation. Samsung, LG, and Intel are all starting to use solar power and produce solar products.
