Academician Chen Qingtai: Fuel cells are a revolutionary alternative to fuel technology

At the "Fuel Cell Academic Salon" of the China Electric Vehicle Hundred People's Congress held recently, Chen Qingtai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointed out that the development of fuel cells is of great significance in the current critical period of emphasizing the development of a green economy and industrial transformation and upgrading.

“It can be said that fuel cells are a revolutionary alternative to fuel technology,” Chen Qingtai said.

According to reports, the fuel cell power generation principle is exactly the same as the lithium battery. But unlike lithium batteries, fuel cell power generation requires an internal combustion engine, so it works differently than lithium. At present, the development of international fuel cells has entered the third stage, namely the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles.

Chen Qingtai pointed out that fuel cells are a revolutionary alternative to fuel technology. Therefore, the development of fuel cell technology is of great significance. "It can be said that in the process of China's industrial development, we are less involved in such revolutionary alternative technologies."

He further pointed out that for industries in the frontier competition, the change of alternative technology is often subversive to the industry. For example, after the digital camera entered the market, it took almost 10 years to replace the film imaging technology. Although many of the technologies of digital photography actually came from Kodak, because they did not develop digital photography in the monopoly of color film, Kodak was eventually overthrown by the alternative products they invented.

“China has become the country with the largest automobile production and sales in the world, but we must see that if we lack sufficient technical accumulation and technical preparation, the larger the industry, the greater the market risk.” Chen Qingtai, for example, in the field of color picture tubes, Chinese companies have been tracking technology abroad for more than 20 years. In the early 21st century, the industry's production and sales have become the world's number one. However, in just three or five years, flat panel displays have completely replaced color picture tubes, and China's hundreds of billions of assets have suddenly disappeared.

"Today, we can't afford to lose a big industry like a car. All sectors of society should be sensitive and concerned about the huge changes in the automotive industry," Chen Qingtai said.

He pointed out that China's automobile industry should have the ability to support cutting-edge technology investment to the present day. The key is the strategic choice between the government and enterprises. It should be pointed out that the growth of alternative technologies often requires a long process. At present, the research and development of fuel cell vehicles has been at least for 30 to 40 years, but China must not embrace the opportunistic mindset. "The history of the flat panel display industry Tell us that without early R&D investment, there will be no fruitful gains in the later period."

Chen Qingtai finally pointed out that before this, China's "863" technology research and development plan has included fuel cells, and after years of efforts, China has established a certain technical foundation. In addition, in recent years, international automobile companies have made great breakthroughs in fuel cell technology and production costs, and have shown the prospect of industrialization development, which is very encouraging. In the future, I hope that China can further increase its research efforts in this regard.
